My favourite thing to do on a Sunday morning is wake up early, have a big cup of strong black coffee and go for an (embarrassingly short) run. On the way back, I usually buy a flaky, hot and insanely aromatic pain au chocolat- to be honest, that’s probably the main reason why I get up early and go for a run in the first place…

Last time I did this, I had an epiphany: pains au chocolat are the definition of happiness for me. I know this sounds quite shallow, but as I’m staring at the words ‘pain au chocolat’ appearing multiple times on my screen, I’m feeling better already. (Also, on second thought, that was not really an epiphany- I was just really hungry).

I’d love to know: what’s your definition of food happiness?

*Sometimes, when I’m feeling super motivated and energetic, I skip the run altogether and make pains au chocolat at home- a far better workout, if you ask me. This recipe is fantastic.

    I am very glad you posed the question my dear friend. Spaghetti Bolognese beyond any shadow of a doubt, defines happiness for me. Ever since I was a (not so) tiny kid, the mere thought of spaghetti bolognese made me feel better. I remember my dad waiting to pick me up from the bus stop after school and me, asking him every time ” What are we eating dad?!” -“Probably fish son.” – “Nooo, my day is ruined.” -“I’m pulling your leg, it’s spaghetti bolognese, hush.” -“Yaaaay, best day eveeer!”.
    I’ve even dreamt about spaghetti bolognese. Happiness, indeed.

    Damn it, Vasili! That’s on my food happiness list too!
    So yes, here goes:
    – my mom’s spaghetti bolognese (she rarely makes it but when she does it’s a special, heart-warming, sun-is-shinning type deal)
    – my mom’s fish stew: super fresh, super fragrant and perfectly seasoned
    – the tasty other’s mac and cheese (also, a rare and wonderful occasion)
    – kedgeree: anyone’s, anywhere, in any variation
    -hilopites with milk, butter, feta cheese and lots of black pepper: a super simple and easy to make dish with egg pasta, it is comfort food at its best

    Hey “people of bolognese” let me give you my two cent on bolognes-o-perfection..
    Not one but two tips for you and i’m not even one of you, don’t get me wrong, I do like pasta but definitely it is not my definition of food happiness. so..

    a/ try to add some cold lettuce, like from your salad. no worries for the oil or the vinegar. Adds freshness to your plate and some interesting pattern for your tongue

    b/ (my personal favorite) Instead of cheese on top of it, make a yogurt sauce with lot of garlic, cayenne pepper, olive oil and maybe some vinegar. if you are not ashame you can always add some cheese too. 🙂

    Dear Amaryllis, I am happy to report that I have mastered my food happiness, both as a practitioner and an acolyte of the bolognese dark art. Why, just yesterday I had spaghetti bolognese with mizithra cheese (and wholemeal pasta) for the first time in one and a half (carbless) month. Pure bliss, i fell in love again. I did accompany it with lettuce salad AND raw garlic on the side (which for me, completes perfection.) I’ve had my fair share of food bliss with you and Alkyoni involving pasta with aubergine, french onion soup and tiramisu (just to name the first things that come into mind.) Btw, I am off to the market to get some fish, any suggestions?

      Ok, so when am I having this masterpiece? You know, just so you can make up for all those meals I was slaving over for you and Alkyoni. (Also, I had to look up acolyte. Damn!)
